R4: Compost

Composting at the Loyola Campus

History of Composting at Loyola

On the Loyola campus, the composting facilities are outdoors. Until 2008, traditional composting bins used had a capacity of 25m3. The compost thereby produced every year is redistributed to the department of Facilities Management for fertilising the plants on campus. R4 recently expanded its composting activities on the Loyola campus to compost 65% of the university’s organic wastes (as recommended by the Quebec Residual Materials Management Policy). The new facility was launched in September 2008. The objective of this new project is to compost 100 tons of organic wastes yearly. This objective should be reached within 5 years. R4 Compost anticipates an annual production of 30 to 50 tons of compost that will be used for the creation of green spaces within the university.

R4 Compost would like to thank all Concordia University students who have financially supported the expansion of the composting project on the Loyola campus through the Sustainable Action Fund. R4 Compost would also like to mention the contribution of Eco-Action (Ministry of Environment Canada), the Concordia Council Student Life (CCSL), the department of Environmental health and safety (EHS) and the department of Facilities Management. R4 Compost received the Forces AVENIR award (Environment category) in 2007.

The R4 Compost Loyola Project is a multistakeholder project, born from a student initiative which will be fully integrated in Concordia University waste management operations before 2012. To do so, the R4 Compost Group which has a strong expertise in composting, must develop and evaluate successful procedures for education, organic waste collection, composting and use of the compost so that long-term operations by Concordia University are successful. To learn more about this transition plan from R4 Compost Group to Facilities Management Department check out the roles and responsibilities of the different stakeholders.
